The Brook--Outdoor Classroom

 Mission
The Mission of our project is to ensure that the students of Shady Brook understand, respect, and enjoy nature. Through observation and research, students will see how our actions, positive or negative, have an impact on the natural world we enjoy.  This means that through this project, our students will be made aware of the environmental impacts on daily life.  They will learn strategies and explore issues that will influence their decision making now and as adults.  While they are learning and applying strategies to preserve the environment, they will hands-on research and explore future careers in the field of biological sciences.

What’s Growing.
Shady Brook wants to give a special SHOUT OUT to the men of the First Wesleyan Church for building our raised beds.
We are also being creative trying to find ways to keep our feathered friends fed.

On The Horizon

Doug Vernon from the North Carolina Research Campus has been a great resource and support for our teachers and students with making good crop choices.

Help Needed

One of the greatest challenges we face in our garden is the general maintenance of weeding, watering, and trimming. If you have any youth or volunteer groups that would like to sign up for a month of the year to help with this, just email Karleen Bainbridge to set up a time and we would be glad to highlight your group on our website.

If you can help in any of these areas, please sent in a note to the” Outdoor Classroom  Committee” or
e-mail
karleen.bainbridge@kannapolis.k12.nc.us.

v  Donate birdseed, plants, garden flags

v  Maintenance, weed pulling.

Teaching children about the natural world should be treated as one of the most important events in their lives.
