Nationally Board Certified Teacher

Welcome to My Exceptional Classroom

My name is Sarah Chapman and I am in my 11th year as the Autism Teacher at Shady Brook Elementary. I work with 3rd-5th grade students with Autism for Kannapolis City Schools. I was Shady Brook Elementary School's 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year and Kannapolis City Schools Co-Runner-Up for Teacher of the Year. I am also a National Board Certified Teacher.

College(s) Attended/Degrees Earned:
I have a bachelors of arts in Special Education K-12 and Elementary Education K-6 from Marshall University in Huntington, WV. I am currently pursuing a masters degree from UNCC.

Educational Philosophy/Vision:
My belief as an educator is that all students can and do learn at different rates and levels. "Once you've met one child with autism, then you have met one child with autism!" I am a firm believer in differentiated instruction to meet each child's academic potential. I want my students to experience all aspects of education by having fun and being active participants in their learning. My dream is that education is not just excellence for a few, but that every opportunity is accessible to all learners.

October:
-In science we are working on a Unit with the 5 Senses. Students will be able to recognize when and how we use our 5 senses (Hear, Smell, Taste, Touch, and See). We will also be looking at internal body parts and their functions.

-In group reading time we are working on reading an adapted book on Charlotte's Webb. We are focusing on one chapter each week. Be sure to ask your child about their reading vocabulary and their favorite events in the story. Students are also working individually on reading goals and are making progress daily.

-In Math groups we are using computer based math programs along with individual instruction. Please continue to work on counting to 50 at home and basic addition and subtraction facts. Students are also using Dreambox and OSMO to work on math skills on the iPad and computer.

-During social skills we are working on Taking Turns. We are practice activities to work on social skills in the classroom and throughout the school.

SAVE THE DATE for the AUTISM SPEAKS WALK on October 28, 2017 at the Zmax Dragway in Concord, NC. We will be fundraising with t-shirt sales. All Autism t-shirt sales are due Oct 10th. We will begin collected change in October for Autism.
