Welcome to My Second Grade Classroom

I am Karleen Bainbridge and I will be teaching in second grade this year. I moved to North Carolina from Buffalo, New York over 20 years ago and fell in love with the Southern hospitality. I am married and have two children. Teaching and the great outdoors are my passions outside of spending time with my family.

College(s) Attended/Degrees Earned:
I attended Buffalo State College in New York and have a Bachelors in Exceptional Education and K-6 Education

Educational Philosophy/Vision:

"Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire."
William Butler Yeats

This quote reminds me of how our job as teachers is not only to help our students learn the skills they need to succeed, but to get excited and ask questions about the world around them. We want to create life long learners that never stop learning new things.
With the support of parents, I hope to provide my students with a classroom where learning is EXCITING!

Reading

The literacy skills we will be working on this month include building our comprehension by asking and answering “W” questions, describing story structure, and using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words within a text. We will also continue talking about the characters, setting, and plot of the texts we read.  In addition, we will also work on the following tasks:

  • identifying text features (diagrams, bold print, glossaries, indexes) to locate key information in a text

  • decoding two syllable words with long vowels

  • decoding words with common prefixes and suffixes

Shady Brook is having its first annual Christmas Around the World.  Every classroom is studying a different country; learning fun facts and the holiday traditions in that country.  For the next couple of weeks we will have fun learning about our country and as the holiday gets closer we will have the opportunity to “travel”  to other classroom to learn about different traditions.
